Community Spotlight: DEFIANCE: The PLATHERO Player and Caster!
Q: Introduction
Greetings, I am Nathan "Defiance" Swanson I am a big StarCraft 2 fan and have made it my dedicated game for the last decade. I grew up playing some hockey on the outdoor rinks of Minnesota up to the D3 level.
Q: When did you start getting into Starcraft/Starcraft 2, and what was your ' this game is awesome' moment?
I started out playing Warcraft 2 Tides of Darkness in 95' and I was hooked on RTS. Then StarCraft came out in 98' and seeing the factions and the story really sold me on StarCraft and I have been with it ever since.
Q:As a player, AND caster, which do you find more enjoyable, or prefer?
I prefer to play the game. I really like the challenge and piecing together a strategy. Almost nothing compares to seeing that victory screen after a really close back and forth.
Q:Have you always played Terran, or was there a time you played a different race? What made you stick with Terran?
Yes, I have been playing Terran ever since Brood War. I really enjoy the race specific abilities and units that come with Terran. Scans, Repair, Tanks, Nukes just to name a few. Being able to set the pacing in a game is a nice bonus. As I like to be on the map active with units.
Q: What has been the biggest challenge for you as a player, who also cast while you are playing?
Being forgiving with gameplay mistakes in front of fans/spectators. Every performer has to come to terms that we will not always respond perfectly. In fact, we may even look very silly. When I first started out I struggled with accepting under performance, created high expectations and endured self shame. Definitely a period in time were I took myself way to serious. Lucky I took a step back to re evaluate why I chose to play and cast in the first place. And it has been way more fun and silly now.
Q: What is Platinum Heroes, and what does being a CPT within Platheroes mean to you?
Platinum Heroes is a StarCraft 2 Clan created in 2019 with over 400 members. I joined Oct 2022. A few months later I was promoted to Captain of CTL (Chobo Team League). Being a Captain means I get the opportunity to create an atmosphere of comradery and empower clanmates to push themselves further to achieve that which they themselves did not think was possible.
Q: When you first got into the game, did you ever imagine your life would be this involved within the game?
Not at all. I am however very pleased with this journey
Q: Either as a player, or caster, is there any memorable moments, events, or tournaments that stand out to you, and why?
Back in February 2020 ESL Open Cup #7 I was in a winning position to take a map from Ruff. Unfortunately I blundered my advantage and lost. Well a little over 4 years and I got another shot. On March 10th 2026 I was able to score a map in a Best of 3 vs Ruff. I was, and am very proud of that small win. This is my message. That if you dedicate yourself you can do remarkable things in this game. Even when the MMR says you stand no chance.
Q: Who do you consider to be your favorite player, and why?
Byun. I enjoy his ability to set the pace and be a micro god. There is always something very magical happening when he is in the game. I will never forget the run of 2016 and the REAPER MAN!!
Q: If you could have a co-caster, who would you want, and why?
I think it would be fun to cast with Jared 'PiG' Krensel. I appreciate his insights of the game and up beat commentary. Just a fun guy to watch and listen too.
Q: What is your goals for 2026?
I believe StarCraft 2 has a bright future. I plan to continue my development as a student of the game and foster organizations that keep the competitive community going through sponsorships. It is exciting times!!
